A POLICE officer who investigated a crash that killed three pensioners on the A1 in Northumberland, yesterday called for the junction they were trying to cross to be closed off.

Northumbria Police collision investigator Jeff Gallon spoke out at an inquest into the accident at the Guyzance crossing at Swarland, near Alnwick, last September.

Longhoughton football pitch plans opposed

PLANS to build football pitches in Longhoughton are facing opposition from neighbours who fear they will be plagued by noise.

Longhoughton Village Development Trust is seeking planning permission for two grass pitches and one floodlit synthetic turf pitch, behind Johnson House in Park Road.

THE Alnwick Garden is generating almost £7m per year for the county's economy, according to a new study.

Figures show that every £1 of income generated by the attraction results in an additional 85p being spent in the area.

A RELIC of the North East's proud coal mining heritage was sold for £2.34m yesterday when it came under the auctioneer's hammer in London.

The 56-acre former Whittle Colliery near Alnwick, Northumberland, topped its £2m reserve price at an auction handled by leading property consultants Colliers CRE.

Jamie WoodA FARMER from Northumberland has triumphed in a 350-mile race to the North Pole.

Jamie Wood, 28, of Prendwick Farm in Whittingham, near Alnwick, took part in the Polar Challenge, a team race in the Arctic to the 1996 location of the Magnetic North Pole and beyond.

He was racing with Paul Moxham, an engineer from Dorset, and Angus King, a primary school headteacher from Harrogate, in a team called Cold Beef.
