Sarah WilkesYOUNG running star Sarah Wilkes has come up with a blooming good idea to boost the coffers of the popular annual flower show held in her Northumberland village.

Eleven-year-old Sarah - whose running talent has seen her win a series of leading races and become a member of the Morpeth Harriers club - had the idea of a fun run to support Warkworth Show, which will be staged for the 137th time in August.

Sarah (pictured outside Warkworth castle), who lives in Warkworth and is a pupil at Alnwick's Dukes Middle School, believes the 2.5km run will add to the show's appeal, as well as raising vital income to help its running costs

ROCKETING thefts of farmers' red diesel in the North East are being spurred by high prices at the pumps.

Experts at agricultural insurer NFU Mutual said they had seen more thefts in all areas of the North East, with Northumberland farmers in particular suffering.

Red diesel checks

In one incident last month in the Alnwick area, 1,200 gallons of the fuel - which can be used legally only in farm vehicles - was stolen the day after it had been bought for about £2,700.

A HOTELIER whose waste was fly-tipped after he gave it to a rogue scrapman was yesterday ordered to pay more than £1,300 by magistrates.

John Blackmore, director of Blackmore's Plough Hotel Ltd in Alnwick, allowed the scrapman to remove waste from his premises during refurbishment last summer, presuming it would be taken to a tip, the town's court heard.

But he failed to check whether the man was registered to dispose of the waste correctly and it was later found fly-tipped in nearby countryside.
