Pupils at Alnwick's Duchess's Community High School achieved a best ever 95% pass rate of five or more A* to G grades in today's GCSE results.

A total of 30 students gained eight or more A and A* grades, smashing the previous best of 17 last year and an increase higher than the national trend.

Alnwick Town secured their first victory of the season by beating hosts Cramlington Town 3-2.

James Swordy gave Alnwick the lead but replies from Steve Elsey and Kieran Parsons put Cramlington in charge. With five minutes to go, Andrew Tate's equaliser put Alnwick level before Ben Keenan hit their winner.

Students at Alnwick's Duchess's Community High School achieved a 99% pass rate in today's A-levels.

A total of 77% of the school's biggest ever year group of 120 pupils, 20 more than last year, obtained grades A to C. Nine students got three or more A's.

They are Joe Darcy, Josh Davison, Dale Donald, James Fraser, Joe Lockey, Richard Shell, Richard Shell, Connie Spoor, Amanda-Clare Turnbull and Rachel Tweddell. Joe and Connie, both 18, are both bound for Oxford University.

PLANS for a major wind farm in Northumberland were approved by the Government yesterday.

Npower renewables' proposal to erect 18 turbines, 125m high, at Middlemoor, North Charlton, near Alnwick, was given the go-ahead by Energy Secretary John Hutton.

But the wind farm cannot be erected until the energy giant comes up with a way to make sure the turbines do not affect RAF radar systems.

Ray hanging up his tape after 40 years

A MENSWEAR shop owner is hanging up his measuring tape after more than 40 years in the business.

Ray Johnson is selling his Ray's Menswear store in Alnwick after starting work on the site in 1964.

Ray, 59, of West View, North Sunderland, bought the shop in 1983, giving him a total of 44 years at the Bondgate Without site.
