Amateur genealogists are to be given the chance to dig deeper into their ancestry with a workshop at Alnwick library.

The free session next week will give tips and information to those keen on researching their family history and include a talk by Anne Newbury, local Studies Librarian at Woodhorn Museum in Ashington, Northumberland.

The old St James Church Hall in Alnwick has been converted into affordable housing.

The nine-flat development comes thanks to NomadE5, part of the Isos Group and one of the region's largest home-grown social housing providers.

The company has worked with Alnwick District Council and Northumberland house builder Countylife to provide the new flats, which sit across three floors of the building on Pottergate.

Murton were 2-1 victors at home to Alnwick Town in the Challenge Cup thanks to goals by Steve Turner and Mark Smith before Marc Richardson netted for the losers.

Alnwick A found no reply to Bedlington Station's eight-goal haul in the first round of the George Cave Memorial Cup in the Morpeth Sunday League.

The Alnwick business includes a three-bedroom maisonette, together with the potential to adapt the rear of the first and second floors. It is being sold by estate agents Rook Matthews Sayer at a freehold price of £530,000.

PRESSURE on ministers to fully dual the A1 through Northumberland is being increased with the launch of a cross-border campaign group.

The A1 Action Group is campaigning for improvements to the A1 from Dunbar in Scotland to Morpeth in Northumberland after successive Governments have failed to act to boost the economy and safety.

Representatives from business, government, transport groups and local communities are being invited to join the group, which will meet for the first time next month.

Open day at Duchess's High School

An Alnwick school is opening its doors to show everyone the excellent work that goes on.

The Duchess's High School was inspected in November 2007 and was described by the inspectors as 'a good and improving school with many outstanding features'.

It is now holding an open evening to let people see the work that goes on and the achievements of its students.

Advice on new planning rules

Alnwick Council is offering residents advice on new housing application rules.

From October 1, the Government will introduce several major changes, meaning that a large number of householders will no longer need planning permission when extending their homes but in other cases, for example if a home is in a conservation area, there will be stricter criteria.

Planning permission will also be required for new driveways or parking areas which cover an area of more than five square metres and are constructed from surfaces which do not allow water to soak into the ground.

Alnwick Town stadium offer still stands

ALNWICK Town football club has been told it can still have its new ground - if it finds the funding itself.

The Football Club fears for its future after local planners refused two applications from its landlord which would have seen the club's ground sold for redevelopment - raising funds for a much needed new stadium on a new site.

With just 18 months left on its lease and nowhere to go, the club believes it may fold.

In the Re/Max Northern Alliance Premier Division, Alnwick Town's 3-1 home win against Newcastle University hoisted the Northumbrians up to fourth.

The Town had drawn three of their four previous games including last Saturday's stalemate against defending champions Walker Central.

BOSSES at a Northumberland football club last night predicted it would fold after planners blocked their bid for a new ground.

Alnwick Town Football Club has been promised a replacement for its ageing St James' Park home. The poor state of the ground forced it to resign from the Northern League two years ago.

Landlord the Duke of Northumberland Estate's lined up a new site for the club as part of a town sports complex, which already has planning permission. In order to finance the new ground, the Estates sought to sell St James' Park and submitted two planning applications for the redevelopment of the site, for housing and offices.
