Lisa BoltonA Northumberland woman who overcame cancer to re-open her animal sanctuary last night spoke of her astonishment at being included in the New Year Honours list.

Lisa Bolton, 75, who runs the Wildlife in Need centre at Chatton, has been named an MBE for services to animal welfare.

Lisa has run the centre for the last 30 years and originally would capture stricken animals, to take to vets.

Three-tier education could be retained in parts of Northumberland - three years after a huge petition to keep it.

A major review of education plans in the county could now ditch the controversial intention to scrap all 44 middle schools.

The original plan to convert the entire county to a system of primary and secondary education is likely to be scrapped as part of a revised Putting The Learner First (PLF) strategy.

Police oppose 3am opening at Alnwick pub

Police are leading the objections to an attempt by a former Newcastle Falcons rugby player to open his Northumberland pub until 3am every night.

The Falcon's Rest in Alnwick town centre has applied to vary its licence for live and recorded music, and sale of alcohol - which would be allowed 24 hours a day for people living on the premises, their guests and employees.

The Clayport Street pub, owned by former Falcons player Paul Van-Zandvliet, is currently allowed to play music until 1am on Thursdays, 2am on Fridays and Saturdays and midnight on Sundays, subject to conditions.

Alnwick Woolworths closes its doors

Emotional workers at Woolworths stores in the North were drowning their sorrows at farewell parties last night.

Stores in Morpeth, Alnwick and Whitley Bay were among a further 150 across the UK to close yesterday - with the rest due to follow early next week.

Everything - including fixtures and fittings - was being sold off at hugely discounted prices in the run-up to the chain's final collapse, which will leave 27,000 workers facing redundancy.

New Alnwick panto is a family affair

The building of Hadrian's Wall is the subject of a pantomime to be performed in Alnwick next month.

Alnwick Theatre Club has written I, Geordius, echoing the 1970s series I, Claudius and featuring a large helping of North East humour.

The panto tells the story of the dame Doris, who goes to Whitley Bay for her holidays, only to discover she cannot get back to her cafe as the Romans have built a wall in her way in her absence.

Get fit for charity

A charity has launched a challenge to help people in Alnwick and Amble lose weight and get fit.

Grace House North East Children's Hospice Appeal is behind the £s for lbs challenge.

Money raised through sponsorship will be used to build a hospice for children and their families in the North East.

A multimillion pound TV and radio studio could be built in Northumberland. The £5m development in Tynedale would be part of a string of media centres nationwide.

Designs are being drawn up by Napper Architects, the firm behind The Alnwick Garden and the Law Courts on Newcastle Quayside.

Funding would come from a £55m pot from the Department for Children Schools and Families to create media centres nationwide.

Pigeon problem in Alnwick addressed

A pigeonTalks have been held in a bid to find a solution to a feathered pest problem in Alnwick and Amble.

The two towns have historically suffered from plagues of pigeons, with townspeople complaining about the mess the birds make.

A meeting was held in Alnwick earlier this month to find the most effective, humane and long-term solution.

In Division One of the Morpeth Sunday League, the top two both won at home to keep their title hopes up.

Current leaders Traveller's Rest, Choppington saw Steven Young grab a brace in their 2-0 win over Stobhill Social Club.

Lynemouth, three points behind with a game in hand, scored six without reply as they hosted Alnmouth Argyle. Andrew Spratt scored four, along with goals from Pascal Butters and Iain Nickalls.

Alnwick Town 2, Shankhouse 0

After not playing for a month, Alnwick Town moved into fourth in the Re/Max Northern Alliance with a 2-0 home win against Shankhouse.

They won with strikes by Richard Brown and Scott McMullen.
