Crunch leaves Alnwick homes vacant

Affordable homes in Alnwick and Rothbury are not being taken up as the recession continues to bite.

Nine developments in Alnwick are vacant, only three have sold and most of the rest have at least two or more properties left on the market.

At the Clive Gardens site in the town, only three of the seven two-bedroom apartments have been sold.

Alnwick RumA shipment of North East rum is on its way to Africa to help a charity raise money for child AIDS victims.

Crew on HMS Northumberland are taking part in the Mombassa Iron Man Challenge on Sunday.

Seven men and five women will running, rowing and cycling their way through three half-marathons in the Kenyan city. And waiting at the finish line will be a case of rum all the way from Alnwick, Northumberland.

SnowdropThe much-loved snowdrop walks at Howick Hall Gardens near Longhoughton will begin early in February.

Rated by BBC Gardeners' World magazine as one of the top five coastal gardens in the country, Howick boasts one of the best collections of woodland snowdrops in the North of England.

Head gardener Robert Jamieson is anticipating a good show for visitors this month, despite the very wet winter months.

He said: "We have several varieties of Galanthus, the largest drifts of which are the Galanthus nivalis - the common single snowdrop, but there are also doubles and the Northumberland Yellow, Galanthus nivalis "Sandersii Group.

Work to improve safety at an A1 crossing in Northumberland where three people were killed should finally begin next month.

Pensioners Harold and May Fox, 76 and 71, of Swarland, and driver Stanley Loftus, 82, of Vale House, Jesmond, Newcastle, died when their car was in collision with another at the crossing at Guyzance in September 2007.

New Northumberland council will keep logo

Northumberland County CouncilNorthumberland's new super council is to retain the existing county council's official logo when it takes over following local government reorganisation in April.

A working group has concluded there is merit in reviewing the 35-year-old logo to ensure it reflects the new unitary council's vision and values.

However, the need to prioritise effective service delivery from April 1 means it will be retained for the time being.

Tomorrow will see the launch of a new free newspaper for Journal readers in Northumberland.

Lesbury parish newsletter awarded £9,300

A project that allows residents of a rural community to stay informed is going from strength to strength after receiving thousands of pounds in lottery funding.

Lesbury Parish Council began producing its village newsletter last year in the hope of linking the community and making sure that everyone was aware of what was happening in the area.

The importance of the project, which benefits nearly 500 households, was recently recognised when organisers were awarded a £9,300 lottery grant to secure the future of the vital service.

A schoolgirl from Alnwick has made to the finals of the National Fencing Championships.

Jenny Shell has joined three schoolmates from Newcastle's Church High in getting places in the competition. She will compete in the under 18s singles competition after securing two of the four regional places.

She said: "When I walked into the school hall for our first session I expected there to be about five people there and there was 15. There has been up to 500 people at some of the competitions we have attended, I just can't believe how popular fencing is.

Alnwick Town progressed in the PinPoint Recruitment Northern Alliance Charity Cup with a single goal against Ponteland United.

The winner was scored after 30 minutes by Mark Cockburn after Ben Keenan had shown a quick turn of pace in the Ponteland penalty area, only to see his shot strike the far post.

But Cockburn was on hand to fire the rebound home.

Chatton destroyed 15-1

Felton top-scored in the Morpeth Sunday League Division Three with a 15-1 rout of Chatton. Luke Strangeways gained scant consolation for the home side, as Jon Snaith (4), Tony Brown (2), Mark Cockburn (2), Stephen Dick, Kevin Elliott, Sean McKay and an own goal saw Felton fill their boots at the other end.

Traveller's Rest, Choppington returned to the top of the Morpeth Sunday League Division One table with a 5-2 win over Bedlington Northumberland Arms.
