The festival has attracted acts from all over the world during its history, as well as being a showcase for Northumbrian culture and attracting thousands of people to the town.

Missing Alnwick man found

Andrew McArthurA schizophrenic who went missing from home for three nights has been found after he took a train to Belgium.

Andrew McArthur telephoned his distressed family early yesterday morning to say he was in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, and was safe and well.

The 23-year-old had disappeared from his mother Jean's house in Christon Bank, near Alnwick, Northumberland, on Sunday while she was at church.

Andrew, who is on a strict regime of anti-psychotic medication, first travelled to Edinburgh, where he was spotted on CCTV, before flying to London where he made contact with his aunt, Judy McGirr.

Alnwick Garden's 'Wet Yourself Weekend' saw the world's biggest family water fight on Saturday afternoon. Children and the odd adult had 15 minutes of fun as the no holds barred water fight started at 2pm prompt.

Tributes paid to Alnwick landowner

He was a visionary who is widely accepted as the genius behind the stunning success of Kielder Water, and yesterday tributes were paid to Edward Wrangham who has died aged 81.

The Northumberland landowner, environmentalist and mountaineer who was awarded the OBE passed away on June 23.

Mr Wrangham, of Harehope Hall near Alnwick, was widely known as Ted and was instrumental in making plans for Kielder Water, Britain's biggest artificial lake, a reality.

A visitor attraction has launched a billboard campaign to pull in summer crowds.

The Alnwick Garden has joined forces with Signposter.com, the online outdoor advertising access point for small businesses, to promote its one pence children's entry fee and showcase the range of activities it offers.

The posters, which feature a large image of a child enjoying the garden, will be on display throughout August. The panels are in busy, prominent locations in popular tourist areas.

Family appeal over missing Alnwick man

missing.jpgThe family of a 23-year-old missing man who suffers from schizophrenia have made a desperate appeal for him to come home.

Andrew McArthur went missing from his mother Jean's house in Christon Bank, near Alnwick, on Sunday when she went to church.

He texted Jean, 64, a teacher at nearby Hipsburn First School, to say he was going to see friends in nearby Alnmouth but instead he caught a train to Edinburgh - where he was spotted on CCTV cameras.

Alnwick woman to head swine flu response

An Alnwick woman has been chosen to manage the response of hospitals in the region to the swine flu pandemic.

Barbara Scott is Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust's new director of flu resilience.

Barbara, who lives near Alnwick, is tasked with ensuring the trust, which manages three general hospitals and six community hospitals in Northumberland and North Tyneside, responds effectively to the pandemic.

Youngsters get cricket competitive

Alnmouth and Lesbury Cricket Club's second annual junior tournament had youngsters from across Northumberland bowled over.

The under-nine competition - held at the SG Wealth Management Northumberland League club's ground, attracted six teams - three from the host club plus Warkworth, Tillside and Alnwick.

These were split into two groups of three, with the top two playing off in the final.

Charity race at Alnwick Garden

Staff at British Airways in Newcastle are to take part in a charity duck race.

The workers will be involved in the 2009 duck dash down the Grand Cascade at Alnwick Garden, which is raising money for the Grace House North East Children's Hospice Appeal.

Thousands of ducks will take to the water on Sunday, August 23.

Alnwick facing uncertainty in recession

Market towns in the region are being hit harder by the recession than anywhere else, new research suggests.

A study carried out by the Government's Commission for Rural Communities (CRC) suggests that unemployment has risen by a third more in market towns than in other areas.

Hexham

A report by the rural watchdog, which draws on research by Action for Market Towns, the Centre for Local Economic Strategies and the Rural Evidence Research Unit at Birkbeck, University of London, suggests that the number of vacant shop units in market towns is also increasing.
