Events coming up at The Duchess's High School

The Duchess's Community High School has a busy schedule with Christmas events and an international visit next month.

On the December 15 the school will be holding its annual Carol Service at St Paul's Church starting at 6pm. The service is a mix of traditional Christmas Carols and performance by the school choirs and orchestra as solo performances by students of the school.

Deputy Head Steve Handley said: "Although we can't trace it right back to 1808, the School Carol Service has been held for over 100 years. This is traditionally a very popular event and we are very keen that the local community of Alnwick district should come along and join - especially as this is the 200th anniversary of the start of the Duchess's school."

A Charity Christingle service is going to be held a little later this year -- in February.

Each year, St Michael's Church, Alnwick, has a Christingle Service in aid of the Children's Society. In the past this has been held on Christmas Eve and has been attended by up to 400 people. Many of them are children who enjoy receiving a Christingle to hold while they form a 'circle of light' and sing.

This year, the church is changing the arrangements. On Christmas Eve at 4.30pm there will be a Crib Service, and the Christingle will take place early next year, at 5pm on Sunday February 1.

Bishop helps The Duchess's School celebrate 200 years

The Bishop of Newcastle is helping The Duchess's Community High School in Alnwick to celebrate a double century.

Established by the Duchess Julia in 1808, the school is 200 years old this year. Starting with just 20 students, the school has expanded over the years to almost 1200 young people attending -- aged 13 to 18.

To mark this important milestone, the school is holding a very special evening at St Michael's Church on Tuesday November 18 at 7pm. A Thanksgiving Service will include music and drama presentations by the students, a talk by Roy Todd (headteacher of the school from 1983 to 1997 who is in the process of updating and publishing a book on the school's history) and a speech by the Bishop of Newcastle about the value of continuity.
