In Transition Film - March 5th Alnwick

We are excited to hold another film evening on March 5th at 7.30 at St James Church Hall in Alnwick to show a new film called "In Transition". This film is an inspiring and welcome departure from the usual doom and gloom that can be conected with the environmental movement. It shows what ordinary people all over the world are doing through the Transition Movement to make changes both big and small in their communities for a more sustainable and satisfying future.

Charity run brought back by new motorcycle group

Caring bikers are riding to the rescue of a popular North East charity event which nearly reached the end of the road after almost two decades.

Every year since 1991, scores of leather-clad motorcyclists have taken part in the annual Easter Egg run organised by the Northumberland Bikers' club.

They collected thousands of chocolate eggs donated by customers at various pubs and clubs and then set off in a huge motorbike convoy to deliver them to children and elderly people in hospitals and homes across Northumberland and Tyneside.

Businesses in Alnwick once again have a chamber of trade to fight their corner.

Alnwick's businesses had been without a voice since the Chamber of Trade folded roughly a decade ago and decided to act amid growing concerns at the number of empty shops in the town.

At least 190 people turned up and around 50 have already signed up as members. They appointed Carlo Biagioni, owner of Carlo's fish and chip shop and a member of the original chamber of trade, as chairman.

Voluntary and community groups in Northumberland have been warned they are facing a reduction in funding for their work - because of the recession and tough budget savings required by the county council.

However, County Hall bosses have reassured the sector that a funding package of £1.3m will still be available next year. Budget proposals recommend more money for charities directly supporting those people worst affected by the recession.

These will include services such as credit unions and the Citizens' Advice Bureau.

Alnwick festival organisers thank community and look ahead to next year

Organisers of a Northumberland music attraction have thanked the community for helping out in their hour of need.

The 34th Alnwick International Music Festival came to an end on Saturday after eight days of song and dance from overseas and local acts in the town's Market Place and Playhouse.

The event's organising committee have praised the way local acts and students from Newcastle University offered their services at the last minute after the attraction's line-up was hit by the 11th-hour withdrawal of two groups from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
