Former Alnwick Woolworths set to re-open
A former Woolworths store on a Northumberland high street is soon to re-open as a clothes shop.
M&Co bought the site on Bondgate Within, in Alnwick, which was occupied by Woolworths until the chain went bust in January.
M&Co hopes to open its new 7,400sqft store on October 3 and is creating up to 13 jobs, to be filled by local people.
The company claims it has been looking for a site in Alnwick for more than a decade but has previously struggled to find suitable premises.
Andrew McGeoch, head of marketing and web services at M&Co, said: "We're thrilled to be bringing M&Co to the local area.
"We've been looking for a site in Alnwick for 15 years. I'm confident that the people of Alnwick will love our extensive range of quality fashion. We're really looking forward to opening our doors."
Alnwick Town councillor Susan Bell last night welcomed the reuse of a prominent site at the heart of the community, saying: "We are all very pleased, it is a prime site."
Plans are currently with Northumberland County Council for shop front alterations at the outlet and installation of a new fascia sign and projecting sign, under M&Co's former name Mackays Stores Ltd.
The re-opening of the Alnwick site follows Iceland's acquisition of Woolworths' old stores in Morpeth and Hexham, while Home Bargains has bought the old Berwick shop.
