Traffic chaos after crashes on A1 north of Alnwick

Posted by The Journal on Dec 18, 08 10:09 AM in News

Rush hour traffic on the A1 was brought to a standstill last night as two crashes less than a mile apart caused commuter chaos.

The stretch of the A1 near Charlton Mires

At around 5pm, Police were called to the A1's junction with the B6341 Charlton Mires turnoff, near Christon Bank, following a three-car pile up.

Then, just a quarter of a mile south on the A1, there was a four-vehicle crash.

More than 10 people were involved in the two accidents but no one was seriously hurt although ambulances were called to the scene to treat people for minor injuries. Firefighters also attended.

Diversions were put in place as a clean-up operation was carried out. The road was closed for an hour-and-a-half after which the normal flow of traffic resumed.
