the Kala Chethena Kathakali Theatre Company Some exotic sights and sounds are coming to Alnwick Playhouse over the next few weeks -- as well as some from a bit closer to home.

Chumbawamba, armed with acoustic guitars, accordion, trumpet and five-part harmonies, bring their recognisable sound to Alnwick on October 17 at 7.30pm.

They are an English band that started out playing Anarcho-punk but over a 25-year career have gone on to play music ranging from pop-influenced dance music and world music to acoustic folk music. Tickets cost £16.50, £15.50 concessions.

On Tuesday October 21, the Kala Chethena Kathakali Theatre Company demonstrate an exotic dance drama from south India.

Kathakali embraces drama, dance, music, visual arts and ritual to create one of the world's most exotic, visually exciting, and powerful forms of theatre. Colourful costumes and elaborate three dimensional make-up (chutti) magically transform actors, singers, and drummers into gods, kings, devils and princesses, allowing them to tell universal stories of the struggle between good and evil through gesture, emotion and expression.

The afternoon demonstration is sold out, but the evening performance starts at 7.30pm costing £9 (£8 concessions). At 6pm, there is also a 45 minute chutti make-up demonstration.

On Wednesday October 22 at 1.30pm there is an enchanting tale from Argentina. Théâtre Sans Frontières' La Pelota Mágica (The Magic Ball) is in simple Spanish primarily for 6-10 year olds, teachers, families and friends. This Argentinean folktale is told through a combination of puppets, performers and live music. It costs £6, £5 concessions.

On the same day, the High School Autumn Celebration by Duchess's High School is at 7.30pm. In the school's bicentenary year the musicians of the Duchess's High School invite you to a celebration of young talent, featuring superb singers and inspirational instrumentalists.

It is a variety show packed with musical entertainment from many countries and several centuries. Tickets are £6, £3 for under 19s.

The next day, on Thursday October 23 at 7.30pm, there is a film showing of The Dark Knight (Cert 12A), the next installment in the Batman series. Tickets are £5, £4.50 concessions.

Batman (Christian Bale) hopes to hang up his cape and hand over crime-fighting duties to District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), but the arrival of clown-faced master criminal The Joker (Heath Ledger) forces the masked vigilante to question everything he stands for.
